On 18 October 2024, Mr. Udaya Kumar Salian, Lead of the Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries – Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP), met with officials from the Government of Tamil Nadu, including Thiru Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, the Minister of Fisheries. The meeting provided an important platform for dialogue on collaborative approaches to sustainable fisheries development in the region.
During the discussions, Mr. Salian and the officials explored strategies to promote responsible fishing practices, enhance resource management, and implement sustainability initiatives that align with both local and international standards. Emphasis was placed on sharing knowledge and experiences from the Karnataka State FIP to support similar improvements in Tamil Nadu’s fisheries sector.
The meeting highlighted the importance of inter-state collaboration for long-term sustainability and ecosystem protection. By engaging government representatives and stakeholders, the initiative aims to foster regional cooperation, strengthen fisheries governance, and ensure that fishing communities benefit from environmentally responsible and economically viable practices.
