Karnataka State FIP Achieves SFP FIP B Rating Milestone for Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries (December 2025)
The Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries – Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) reached a major sustainability milestone by achieving a B Rating under the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) FIP Evaluation Tool, as recognized within the MarinTrust Improver Programme. The SFP FIP Rating system is a globally respected mechanism used to measure the progress and effectiveness of Fishery Improvement Projects, with ratings ranging from A to E. Achieving a B Rating signifies that the Karnataka State FIP has demonstrated substantial, verifiable progress in implementing improvement actions and addressing key environmental and governance gaps identified during earlier assessments.
This achievement is the result of coordinated efforts undertaken since the inception of the FIP, involving close collaboration between industry stakeholders, fishermen associations, government agencies, and scientific institutions such as ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). Through structured fishery assessments, development and execution of action plans, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and alignment with international sustainability frameworks, the Karnataka State FIP has progressed beyond the foundational stages of improvement. The B Rating reflects measurable advancements in fishery management practices, transparency, data collection, and collaborative governance—core criteria under the SFP evaluation methodology.
Earning an SFP FIP B Rating significantly strengthens the global standing of Karnataka’s small pelagic purse seine fishery within the marine ingredients supply chain. It demonstrates the fishery’s commitment to continuous improvement, responsible sourcing, and long-term sustainability, while also supporting market confidence and international recognition through the MarinTrust Improver Programme. Building on this milestone, the Karnataka State FIP will continue to implement its remaining action plans, address residual gaps, and work toward higher performance ratings and potential future certification, ensuring lasting environmental, social, and economic benefits for the fishing communities of Karnataka.
