On 23 September 2023, a comprehensive fishery assessment for the small pelagic purse seine fishery was completed in alignment with MarinTrust requirements. This evaluation represented a major step toward understanding the current status of the fishery and determining its readiness for future improvement initiatives and international sustainability benchmarks.
The assessment was conducted by MRAG UK, an independent and globally recognized auditing and research organization. Their experts reviewed the fishery’s performance across ecological, management, and operational parameters, ensuring that every aspect was measured against MarinTrust’s rigorous standards for responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship.
Through this detailed review, MRAG UK identified key gaps and priority areas that require improvement. These findings provide a clear pathway for strengthening management practices, enhancing traceability, and promoting long-term sustainability within the fishery. The results will guide the next phase of the Fishery Improvement Project, supporting continuous progress and informed decision-making.
