On 30 August 2024, the Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries-Karnataka state FIP, in collaboration with the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and the Department of Fisheries, Malpe, organized a special event to celebrate Whale Shark Day at Malpe Fishing Harbour. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the conservation of whale sharks and other shark species, highlighting their ecological importance and the need for responsible marine practices.
As part of the event, a specially designed awareness poster was released to educate fishermen, stakeholders, and the local community about shark species, their role in the marine ecosystem, and the importance of sustainable fishing practices. The day featured informative sessions and discussions on marine biodiversity, emphasizing ways to minimize human impacts on vulnerable species and habitats.
The celebration reinforced the commitment of the FIP, CMFRI, and the Department of Fisheries to marine conservation and community engagement. By combining scientific knowledge with outreach activities, the initiative helped foster a culture of awareness, responsibility, and stewardship among local fishermen and coastal communities, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Karnataka’s fisheries.
