Charting a Sustainable Future: MOU for Karnataka’s Small Pelagic Fisheries Signed with CMFRI

On December 19, 2023, a significant milestone in sustainable fisheries management was achieved with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the stakeholders of the Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) and the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). The ceremony took place at CMFRI’s head office in Cochin, underscoring the commitment of all parties involved to enhance the sustainability of small pelagic purse seine fisheries.
The FIP aims to address critical challenges faced by the small pelagic fishery sector in Karnataka, focusing on sustainable harvesting practices, marine biodiversity conservation, and the livelihoods of fishing communities. As a national leader in marine research, CMFRI will play a pivotal role in providing scientific expertise, monitoring fish stocks, and guiding the implementation of best practices within the FIP framework. The collaboration reflects a shared vision to align fisheries management with global sustainability standards. By leveraging CMFRI’s research capabilities and fostering cooperation among stakeholders, the initiative seeks to promote responsible fishing, ensure long-term ecological balance, and support economic resilience in the sector.
This partnership is a testament to India’s proactive efforts in fisheries sustainability, contributing to national and international goals such as the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on life below water. The MOU marks the beginning of an inspiring journey toward sustainable marine resource management, promising a better future for Karnataka’s fishing communities and marine ecosystems.
