On 23 June 2025, a significant stakeholder meeting was held at Hotel Essentia Manipal Inn, Udupi, to discuss two major developments in Karnataka’s fisheries sector: the scope extension of the Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries – Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Program (FIP) and the initiation of a new Ring Seine Fisheries FIP. Organized under the leadership of the Karnataka State FIP, the meeting brought together fishermen’s associations, fishmeal and fish oil industry representatives, scientists, and government officials. The event began with a warm welcome address by Mr. Chethan Kumar Suvarna, followed by Mr. Ramesh M. R., who outlined the purpose of the gathering and emphasized the importance of expanding sustainable fisheries initiatives across the Karnataka coast.
A central session of the meeting was led by Dr. Nimnual Piewthongngam, who introduced the broader framework of Fishery Improvement Programs and explained the role of MarinTrust in guiding global marine ingredient supply chains toward sustainability. She presented the progress and achievements of the existing Small Pelagic Purse Seine FIP, noting the improvements in data collection, environmental stewardship, and community participation. Dr. Nimnual then detailed the need for launching a new Ring Seine Fisheries FIP, highlighting its importance due to the ring seine fleet’s growing role in Karnataka’s marine landings. She emphasized scientific monitoring, bycatch reduction, and proper documentation as crucial steps toward aligning ring seine operations with international sustainability standards. The session also included the formal signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking strengthened cooperation among all key partners.
Following the signing, invited guests delivered insightful speeches on the future of Karnataka’s fisheries and the value of expanding FIP activities to additional gear types such as ring seines. They stressed that sustainable fisheries can be achieved only through coordinated efforts between government authorities, scientific institutions, and the fishing community. Their remarks reinforced the state’s commitment to responsible resource management and market-driven sustainability. The event concluded with a thoughtful Vote of Thanks by Mr. Arun Malpe, acknowledging the contributions of all participants and reaffirming collective dedication to Karnataka’s evolving fisheries management framework. The meeting ultimately set a strong foundation for the expansion of FIP initiatives and the successful integration of ring seine fisheries into structured sustainability programs.
