On 05 October 2024, the Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) held a strategic discussion with the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and the Department of Fisheries at the Yashaswi Pithrody office. The meeting focused on identifying and implementing necessary control measures to protect Endangered, Threatened, and Protected (ETP) species within the Karnataka small pelagic purse seine fishery. The discussions aimed to strengthen conservation efforts while ensuring sustainable fishing practices.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the current status of ETP species in the region and deliberated on practical steps to mitigate accidental catches. A decision was made to develop and release an awareness poster highlighting the importance of ETP species, their ecological role, and guidelines for responsible interactions. Additionally, a plan was established to conduct targeted awareness programs for fishermen, equipping them with knowledge and best practices for the protection of vulnerable marine species.
The initiative reinforced the Karnataka State FIP’s commitment to responsible fisheries management, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement. By combining scientific guidance, regulatory oversight, and educational outreach, the project aims to minimize impacts on ETP species, foster sustainable livelihoods, and cultivate a culture of stewardship among Karnataka’s coastal fishing communities.
