Karnataka State FIP Discusses Strengthening Fisheries Management with Department of Fisheries

On 03 August 2024, members of the Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) met with Shri Dinesh Kumar Kaller, Director of the Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka, at his office. The meeting provided a strategic platform to discuss key mechanisms for improving fisheries management and ensuring sustainable practices across the state.

The discussion focused primarily on Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance (MCS) systems in Karnataka’s fisheries. Participants explored approaches to enhance oversight of fishing activities, strengthen compliance with regulations, and implement data-driven monitoring systems. The dialogue emphasized the importance of integrating technology and real-time monitoring tools to ensure sustainable resource utilization and traceability in the supply chain.

The meeting reinforced the collaborative commitment between the FIP team and the Department of Fisheries to achieve long-term sustainability. By developing robust MCS frameworks, the initiative aims to protect marine resources, support responsible fishing practices, and ensure that Karnataka’s small pelagic fisheries meet national and international standards for transparency and sustainability.
