On 20 July 2024, an awareness program for fishermen was conducted in Mangalore at Hotel AJ Grand, organized in association with the Export Inspection Agency (EIA), Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The program aimed to educate fishermen on the importance of registration, traceability, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) within the seafood supply chain, emphasizing the role of responsible practices in ensuring product quality and market access.
The training sessions were led by distinguished experts, including Shri Rajakumar Naik, Deputy Director, MPEDA Mangalore SRD; Shiriskar Dipty Arvind, Assistant Director, Export Inspection Agency-Kochi, Sub Office Mangalore; Dr. Shivakumar Magada, Professor at the College of Fisheries, Mangalore; and Dr. Supriya, Technical Officer, FSSAI Mangalore. They provided practical guidance on regulatory compliance, proper documentation, and implementing GMP at every stage of the supply chain, ensuring that fishermen understood their critical role in maintaining product integrity.
The interactive program encouraged active participation and knowledge sharing among the fishermen, reinforcing the importance of adhering to global standards and traceability requirements. By equipping the fishing community with this knowledge, the initiative strengthened the foundation for a more transparent, responsible, and sustainable fishery sector in Karnataka, aligning with the objectives of the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP).
