On 29 February 2024, the Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) was officially launched through a series of kick-off meetings that brought together key institutions and industry partners. Representatives from the Department of Fisheries (DoF), the College of Fisheries (COF), and various stakeholders from the marine sector convened to outline the project’s goals and reinforce a shared commitment to sustainable fishery management. The launch marked the beginning of a coordinated, science-driven approach to strengthening the small pelagic purse seine fishery.
As part of the inaugural activities, the FIP team held discussions with leading experts, including Dr. H. N. Anjaneyappa, Dean of the College of Fisheries, Mangalore, and Dr. Manja Naik, Professor and Head of Fish Processing Technology at the same institution. Their guidance was instrumental in refining the scientific framework of the project and aligning its objectives with national and international standards for responsible fisheries.
Further meetings followed at the Malpe Fisheries Office, where Smt. Savita Khadri, Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, provided valuable administrative insights and support. The day concluded with a large stakeholder gathering at Hotel Ocean Pearl in Udupi, where fishermen, industry representatives, and community leaders discussed their roles within the FIP. The collective participation and enthusiasm demonstrated the strong foundation on which the project will continue to build meaningful, long-term improvements for Karnataka’s small pelagic purse seine fishery.
