Karnataka State FIP proudly participated in the Global Shrimp Forum

On 03 September 2025, the Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries – Karnataka State FIP proudly participated in the Global Shrimp Forum held in Utrecht, Netherlands, an eminent global platform dedicated to advancing sustainability, innovation, and responsible practices within the shrimp and marine ingredients sectors. The Forum convened over 500 industry leaders, policymakers, scientists, producers, and supply-chain stakeholders from around the world, fostering meaningful dialogue on the future of the shrimp industry and its interconnected value chains. This premier event provided a unique opportunity for our team to engage with international experts, gain insights into global trends, and represent the perspectives and challenges of Indian small pelagic fisheries on a truly global stage.

Our primary contribution on this day was active participation in the “Future of Responsible Marine Ingredients” panel, co-hosted by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). The session focused on collaborative efforts to scale up responsibly sourced marine ingredients for aquafeeds and reduce biodiversity and social risks throughout feed supply chains. As the Coordinator of Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries – Karnataka State FIP, Dr. Nimnual Piewthongngam presented insights on the operational experiences and sustainability challenges specific to the Indian marine ingredients sector, emphasising the importance of traceability, ecological stewardship, and equitable market access for small-scale fisheries in global discussions. The dialogue with global partners highlighted the need for inclusive frameworks that support both environmental responsibility and socio-economic resilience for fishing communities.

Participation in the Global Shrimp Forum reinforced our commitment to sustainable fisheries practices and expanded our network with key international organisations, certification bodies, and industry leaders. Engaging with stakeholders at this level enabled us to exchange knowledge on best practices, innovative strategies, and emerging standards shaping responsible sourcing and feed formulation. The interactions and feedback received during the session will further inform our work to strengthen sustainability outcomes for small pelagic fisheries in Karnataka and beyond. Representing our organisation at such a globally respected event has not only elevated awareness of our efforts but has also solidified our role as a proactive contributor to the ongoing transformation within the global shrimp and marine ingredients industry.
