Advancing Sustainable Fisheries in Karnataka Through Collaboration and Innovation
To drive sustainability and align Karnataka’s fisheries with global standards, Yashaswi Fish Meal and Oil Company launched the Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP). This ambitious initiative focuses on enhancing fisheries management in Karnataka by uniting key stakeholders across the public and private sectors, including government organisations, research institutions, industry leaders, and local fishing communities, to protect and strengthen vital marine resources.
The heart of the project is the implementation of the Fisheries Action Plan (FAP), recognized by MarinTrust, which serves as a blueprint for achieving measurable improvements. Through collaborative efforts and active stakeholder engagement, the FIP promotes responsible fishing practices, ensures the preservation of key small pelagic species, and secures the economic resilience of fishing communities.
By fostering innovation, accountability, and a shared commitment among all stakeholders, the Karnataka State FIP sets a powerful precedent for sustainable fisheries management—ensuring the health of marine ecosystems, supporting livelihoods, and securing a thriving future for the region’s fisheries.

Advancing Sustainable Fisheries
“The Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries, Karnataka State FIP aims to enhance sustainable fisheries management through:
- Sourcing fish from responsible, well-managed fisheries that adhere to the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, with traceability through the supply chain.
- Ensuring resource conservation and management in line with Marine Fisheries Regulations (MFRA) and Karnataka State regulations.
- Developing systems for monitoring, compliance, and traceability to prevent and eliminate IUU fishing.
- Conducting regular stock assessments of target species by accredited scientists and publicly sharing the results.
- Establishing a system to manage fishery interactions with endangered, threatened, and protected species (ETP).”

Driving Sustainable Fisheries Management
The Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) in Karnataka is a transformative initiative committed to enhancing sustainability and responsible fisheries management through:
- Sourcing Responsibly: Procuring fish exclusively from well-managed fisheries that align with the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, ensuring full traceability across the supply chain.
- Resource Conservation: Implementing robust conservation and management practices in compliance with Marine Fisheries Regulations Act (MFRA) and Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act to protect marine resources.
- Combating IUU Fishing: Developing advanced systems for monitoring, compliance, and traceability to prevent, detect, and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
- Science-Driven Management: Conducting regular, independent stock assessments of target species by accredited scientists and transparently sharing the results to ensure accountability and informed decision-making.
- Protecting Marine Life: Establishing structured measures to manage fishery interactions with Endangered, Threatened, and Protected (ETP) species, safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem health.
This initiative reflects a bold commitment to balancing ecological preservation with the economic resilience of Karnataka’s fisheries—ensuring a sustainable and thriving future for marine ecosystems and the communities that rely on them.
Elevating Karnataka Fisheries
The Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) in Karnataka was accepted into the MarinTrust Improver Programme under the following commitments:
- Collaboration and Engagement: Actively engage and collaborate with other regional FIPs targeting the same fish stocks to foster collective progress and shared solutions.
- Supply Chain Transparency: Provide detailed information on the supply chain and species utilization as new data becomes available from stock assessments or ongoing research.
- Legislative Clarity: Share comprehensive insights regarding any legislative restrictions on the use of species within the project’s scope for marine ingredient production at both the state and national levels.
This acceptance marks a significant step in ensuring Karnataka’s fisheries align with global sustainability standards while driving greater transparency, collaboration, and responsible resource management.
