Second Stakeholder Meeting On Developing A Fishery Action Plan

On Sunday, October 1, 2023, from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., the second stakeholder meeting for the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) in Karnataka took place at the Hotel Manipal Inn in Udupi, Karnataka. The meeting focused on developing a Fishery Action Plan and gathered key participants from various sectors, including representatives from government, academia, and the fishing industry.
Dr. Nimnual Piewthongngam, the Project Leader of FIP in Karnataka, led the meeting alongside Mr. Pitipong Dejjarukul, the Project Manager, and Ms. Pakawan Talawat, the Fishery Technical Advisor.

Mr. Dejjarukul provided an introduction to the FIP and the MarinTrust Improver Program, followed by a presentation of the GAP analysis report by Ms. Talawat. The meeting highlighted the need for an improved assessment process and discussed actionable steps to address identified gaps. Stakeholders engaged in a roundtable discussion, where they provided valuable feedback and recommendations for refining the Fishery Action Plan.
Dr. Prathiba Rohit from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) emphasized the importance of accurate data collection and encouraged collaboration with CMFRI to support ongoing research efforts. Dr. Rohit, Mr. Sarabpreet Singh, General Manager of Devi Sea Foods Company, and other stakeholders voiced concerns about compliance with IUU fishing regulations and the handling of endangered, threatened, or protected species (ETPs).
The meeting concluded with a commitment to revise the action plan based on stakeholder feedback and foster collaborations with key organizations to ensure successful implementation of the FIP in Karnataka. This initiative aims to align Karnataka’s fishery practices with international standards and secure MarinTrust certification.
